A sharp R Mack nicknamed "Karmen Baby" from Addison, Maine that was stopped on the W. bound Mass Pike service plaza near Auburn, MA during the summer of 1973. This NAVL Ford had pulled off of U.S. 5 onto a side street in W. Springfield in summer of 1974. This is a somewhat zoomed in scan of a P.B. Mutrie Trans. R Mack from Waltham, MA stopped along MA Route 147 in W. Springfield shortly before they were acquired by Coastal Tank Lines.
FBG Transport stood for F.B. Guest out of Covington, GA who ran a small fleet in and out of Florida. I shot this White Freightliner in April 1974 at the Courtesy House 76. O/O leased on with Leonard Bros. Trucking from Miami. They were a common sight hauling missile and defense related freight back in the 60's & 70's. They must have run up against hard times and shutdown sometime in the late 70's because they just faded away. April 74 at Courtesy House 76. Ploof Transfer Co. from Jacksonville, FL ran these Pete COE's for years up, down and throughout Florida. Taken April 1974 at the Courtesy House 76 W. of Vero Beach.
This was a former Western (something) tractor that had parked at the Ft Pierce State Farmer's Market on U.S. 1 in April 1974. Does anyone recognize the paint scheme and know which Western fleet it formally belonged to?

I've had one comment that the color scheme is very similar to Montana Express.

Bendix Trucking Services out of Indiana was a regular to Westfield when I was growing up. This F Mack had stopped across the street from the Exit 3 ramp onto the Mass Turnpike in early 1974. Growing up Cumberland Farms from Canton, MA ran these single axle U Mack's with tri axle trailers delivering products to their C-Stores around Southern New England. I shot this one in 1973 in downtown Westfield.
Wulf Trucking Co. from Eastern Iowa across the street from the Mass 10 at the Flying Yankee Restaurant near Auburn, MA in 1974. J.B. Montgomery, Inc., Denver, CO at the Springfield farmer's market 1974. They were a pretty sharp fleet in their day I thought. An O/O leased on with Pittsburgh and new England Trucking from Dravosburg, PA parked at a towing yard near the Mass Pike in Westfield in 1973. This Mack had a longer hood than the typical R model and the air intake was a square box. He must have had a bigger engine under the hood.
Southwire from Carrollton, GA used this color scheme for years and anyone who followed trucking in the Eastern U.S. remembers this private fleet. Unit S230 was stopped at the Mass Pike Westbound service plaza near Ludlow in early 1974. This O/O has his green KWCOE leased to Spector Freight and is waiting for the light to enter onto the Mass Pike Exit 3 entrance ramp back in early 1973. Wright from what looks like Turkey, NC was the O/O of this nice looking GMC Astro that was parked on the shoulder of FL Route 60 W. of Vero Beach, FL in April 1974. This KW had pulled into the Courtesy House 76 in April 1974.
Roy's Trucking Co from (I'm not sure where) had this colorful F Mack parked in front of a cafe by Indian River Truck Brokerage along FL Route 60 W. of Vero Beach in April 1974. An O/O who has his U model Mack leased on with propane hauler H.R. Ritter from Rahway, NJ. I shot this interesting looking rig during summer 1974 at this truck stop on MA Route 102 next to the Mass Pike right at the Mass/ NY State border. It was called State Line, but it was just a place in name only.

Thank you Mike Boyd for removing the bacteria spots.

This O/O leased to Keen Transport had layed over for the weekend at the Mass 10 with his oversized load in Jan. 1976. To the best of my knowledge Sitler, Inc. was mainly a U.S. Mail carrier. I think Brown was a leasing company that either merged with or got acquired by Luby Lease and became Luby Brown. At any rate I use to see this fleet quite often and the Marquis Truck Stop on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield was their refueling point. This was the case in summer 1974 when I made this picture. This U Mack belonged to FllexiVan Truck Rental from New haven, CT and was taken at a warehouse next to the W. Springfield St Johnsbury terminal in early 1974.

Contractors from Portland, OR backing into his delivery dock at the Springfield farmer's market in summer 1974. Gleason Transportation from Vermont was one of those fleets that hauled a little of everything. They ran more milk tankers than anything but I did manage to catch one of their livestock rigs at the 1974 Eastern States Exhibition in W. Springfield which happens to be the biggest annual fair in the New England States.
I think this is a neat picture of this White Freightliner leased to John F. Ivory from Detroit parked out in front of Anderson & Benson Movers/Central Storage in downtown Springfield, MA during summer 1974. L.E. Johnson Trucking Co. Inc. out of Benson, NC owned this really good looking KW COE that I found near Vero Beach, FL in Feb. 1973 with my old Kodak 126 camera before I got my 110 pocket size. I still remember pedaling up to and talking with the driver of this Midwestern Distribution tractor during the summer of 1973. Said he and his partner were getting ready to take a load of Strathmore Paper from Westfield across I-90 clear out to Seattle, WA. That really made an impression on the 15 year old kid that I was at the time.

Minneapolis, MN (before they got big and moved to Indianapolis, IN) stopped across the street from Burger Chef on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in early 1975.
This West Coast Mack is one of my more favorite pictures because I like the angle this good looking independent from SC has it parked while delivering to the Springfield farmer's market in 1974. I couldn't quite make out the lettering on the cab of this Chevy Titan delivering to the A & P warehouse on Springfield's N. end in 1974. I wonder if there are any Titan's still on the road or at least in local service today? The driver of this original version of the IH Transtar was checking into the Westfield Hojo's early one evening during summer 1973 when I snapped it's picture.
Bothen Corporation from I think it was Woodstown, NJ was in Westfield every week pulling a high sided dump trailer first with a day cab Pete conv. then they got this Pete COE which made for a nice picture right along U.S. 20 on the E. side of Westfield in fall 1974. A good looking but unidentified Diamond Reo offloading at the Springfield farmer's market in spring 1975. This was a tough looking Transtar leased to Ligon Specialized Hauler, Inc. from Madisonville, KY (before they sold and were renamed Ligon Nationwide). It was parked next to the photo lab (how convienent) that I used to print most of my 110 shots along Route 147 in W. Springfield in 1974.
Here's my version of the "view from the overpass"!! Shot this view of Westbound traffic while looking East from the U.S. 202 overpass at Exit 3 in 1976. My "secret bicycle hideout spot" was just past that exit sign where the Westbound KWCOE is passing by.
