Cooper Jarrett out of Chicago and later Orange, NJ leased warehouse space for their terminal in W. Springfield, MA. Carroll's Express might have pedaled freight for them locally. I can't remember where Carroll's was based, something tells me Rhode Island, but it could have been Massachusetts also?? Note from R. Peters: Carroll's Express terminal was in Millers Falls, Mass. Found this unidentified GMC Astro across the street from the Mass Pike Exit 3 ramp in 1973. This unidentified Pete COE was in the left turn lane to enter onto the Exit 3 ramp of the Mass Pike from U.S. 202 back in 1973.
Yellow Freight use to put their road drivers into bed at this motel on U.S. 202 N. of Westfield after their run into Yellow's nearby terminal in Westfield. Here is unit 2534 in early 1974. This IH-4200 for Homewood was shot 1973 at O'Connor Lumber in Westfield.
This LeMans Racing Products F/L COE was stopped on the shoulder of U.S. 202 N. of Westfield, MA across from St Mary's Cemetary during the summer of 1972. Perhaps the driver was visiting a departed relatives final resting place? I came up on Unit 72-091 for Ryder Truck Lines early one evening in 1974 along U.S. Route 5 in W. Springfield, MA. Here's an O/O leased to Dallas & Mavis when they were based out of South Bend, IN (I believe) parked next to a W. T. Grants Dept. Store White Road commander at the Westfield, MA Hojo's in 1974.
California-based PAMCO most likely had just finished unloading at the Springfield, MA farmers market when I found him stopped on the shoulder of U.S. 5 in W. Springfield during the summer of 1974. This O/O had his KW leased on to Jones Motor Co. from Spring City, PA in 1974 and had pulled over just before entering the Mass Pike toll booth at Exit 4 which connects I-90 to I-91 & U.S. 5 at W. Springfield, MA. McCasland was an Albany, NY area mail contract hauler who had a route that served the main downtown Springfield, MA post office where I shot this White 4000 in 1974.
Hockaday from Ft Pierce, FL ran mostly Marmon COE's in their tomato hauling small fleet. This unit was delivering to M & S Tomato Co. in downtown Springfield, MA in 1974. KRX or Kroblin Road Xpress from Waterloo, IA (I believe) was another regular delivering meat products to the Northeast. This Astro was parked at a motel along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield, MA in 1974. This unidentified Pete COE at the Springfield, MA farmers market had an interesting paint scheme.
Yellow Freight System #1952 at Sterling Radiator in Westfield 1974 I had the driver of this IH Transtar "trapped" while he was waiting for the light to change while turning off of the Exit 3 ramp of the Mass Pike onto U.S. 202. I pulled up on my bike and "nailed him" back in 1973.
Found this unidentified White Freightliner stopped behind Valle's Steakhouse on U.S. 20 in Springfield, MA which was right in front of the Springfield farmers market. This Yellow Freight System Astro was stopped across from the Redwood Restaurant on U.S. 202 N. of Westfield in 1974. He was hooked to a Dodd's trailer a fleet based in West Plains, MO that Yellow acquired back in 73 or 74. Weleski Transfer Moving and Storage was layed over at the Westfield Hojo's during the winter of 1973-74 and as dirty as it was from winter driving it still posed up real nice.
Robbins from Monson, MA was delivering crushed rock to a new ramp being built in 1973 at Barnes Airport in Westfield. They ran a nice and clean all Autocar small fleet back then. Saw what looked like an ex: Tri-State Motor Transit White F/L delivering to Sterling Radiator in Westfield in 1974. It was kind of odd to see a reefer unit unloading there and I couldn't hardly pass up a truck photo opportunity as a teenager. This unidentified IH 4200 had been towed into this wrecker lot along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in 1974.
Behne was the lettering on the cab door of this White F/L at Hojo's in Westfield in 1974, but he had a placard for Momsen Trucking from Dubuque, IA taped to the bottom of the cab right below the luggage door. Look inside the cab and it looks like the driver is peering out at me, but I believe it's something he had hanging from the ceiling that appears to look like a man's face. This is a "classic" looking IH Transtar with a Great Dane reefer trailer for Robert W. Jeffers at the Springfield farmers market in 1974. Not sure where he was based, but this combination was very popular with Southeastern produce haulers during the late 60's and 70's. Here's a very interesting find for sure...An O/O leased to McLean Trucking Co. from Winston-Salem, NC hauling a load of watermelons into the Springfield, MA farmers market during the summer of 1974. I didn't know McLean had a Special commodities div. perhaps some McLean fan can share his knowledge of this division with us fellow truck buffs.
The owner of this day cab IH 4200 had his unit leased to Pittsburgh & New England Trucking out of Dravosburg, PA and was stopped on U.S. 202 across from St Mary's Cemetary N. of Westfield in 1974.
The owner of this White Freightliner had leased on with Roy Bros. from Billerica, MA and had just finished delivering a load to Ashland Chemicals in Westfield and was parked across from the Mass Pike Exit 3 ramp in 1974. The original unionized Schneider Transfer and Storage delivering a load of beef to Hampden Beef Co. in downtown Springfield, MA in 1974. Sylvania GMC Astro at Westfield Hojo's 1975
Another IH Transtar with an old Great Dane trailer delivering to the Springfield, MA farmers market in 1974. This O/O was leased to Curtis, Inc. from Denver, CO that was in downtown Springfield, MA in 1974. The lettering on the cab door also says Sioux City, IA underneath Denver, CO. Maybe that was his 10-20? Here is an older KW COE with the lettering J & J something on the door at the Springfield farmer's market in 1974
North Star Transport, Inc. out of Thief River Falls, MN was a regular delivering Polaris Snowmobiles to a distributor in an industrial park across U.S. 202 from Exit 3 of the Mass Pike. Sometime during the summer of 1974 found unit 668 in Westfield. The Kenworth conventional was also delivering to the Springfield farmers market in 1974. Watkins Motor Lines had some of these KW's painted almost identical and AMT made a plastic model kit based on it about this time frame. Unidentified Kenworth conventional and a White Freighliner with the missing emblem was leased on with Dealer's Transit out of Chicago and were stopped at Terminal Stations in 1977.
Lineup at Terminal Stations during 1976 Several Then brand new Mack's built at the Hayward, CA Mack plant layed over at the Fairfield, CA Holiday Inn along I-80 taken in evening during 1977. This snazzy looking White Western Star belonged to a fleet called Sullivan's from Ponca City, OK and had stopped by Terminal Stations in 1978.
International Transport had a field office at Terminal Stations so this White Freightliner was making itself at home in 1977 while the driver was probably taking care of business inside. Here's a good variety of new Mack's from the Hayward, CA Mack plant taking a break at Terminal Stations in 1978. A nice looking KW whose owner had leased on with Pirkle Refrigerated out of Wisconsin. This was spring 1978 at Woodland, CA.
This White Freightliner with the "custom" winterfront belonged to John E. Cox from Tampa, FL & St. John's Newfoundland! That's kind of an odd combination of cities if you think about it. I shot him at Jerry's Union 76 Auto Truckstop along I-95 near Manning, SC in Feb. 1973. Bowman Transportation #614 was also taken at Jerry's 76 near Manning, SC in Feb. 1973. In fact, he was parked right next to the John E. Cox unit. A nice looking Diamond Reo belonging to Dominick ?? Produce out of Jacksonville, FL was shot by a citrus packing house in downtown Vero Beach, FL in Feb. 1973.
The red with white trim Pete 359 read Stephens Trucking on the cab door but I could not make out where he hailed from. This was taken at the former Holiday Inn W. of Vero Beach, FL near the former Courtesy House 76 Auto Truck Stop in Feb. 1973.
